**Short answer**

GrandPerspective if you want a free map (open source, macOS 14 or later), OmniDiskSweeper or WizTreeMac if you prefer a sorted list, and Bytesweep if you want each folder explained and a 7-day undo on cleanups. DaisyDisk itself is good value at $9.99 once for up to five Macs, but its Collector deletes permanently, with five seconds to cancel.

### What does DaisyDisk do well, and where does it stop?

[DaisyDisk](https://daisydiskapp.com/) is the best-looking map of a Mac's disk: rings of segments you click to zoom into. It is current (4.34.2, 10 July 2026, with APFS clone detection added in 4.34), runs on macOS 10.13 or later on Apple silicon and Intel, and costs $9.99 once, a lifetime licence "on up to 5 personal Macs" with a 30-day money-back guarantee. The version from its own site can show and purge purgeable space and local snapshots; its guide says the App Store edition cannot purge.

It stops at two places people run into. First, it deletes for real: items you drop on the Collector are removed "permanently... instead of moving them to the system Trash", after a five-second countdown you can cancel. Second, it shows you sizes, not what a folder is or whether it is safe to remove, so a block called `com.docker.docker` or `MobileSync` is left for you to look up.

### How do the alternatives compare?

| Tool | Runs on | Price and licence | How it shows space | How it deletes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| DaisyDisk | macOS 10.13+ | $9.99 once, up to 5 personal Macs | Ring map | Permanently, 5 seconds to cancel |
| GrandPerspective | macOS 14+ | Free (SourceForge) or $2.99 (App Store), GPL v2 | Treemap | Yes (Trash not stated) |
| OmniDiskSweeper | macOS 11 to 26 (per Omni) | Free download (no price listed) | Size-sorted column list | To the Trash; Option for permanent |
| WizTree | Windows; macOS 12+ (WizTreeMac) | Free for personal use; supporter code from $25 once | Tree list and treemap | Not stated by the maker |
| Bytesweep | macOS 14+; Windows 10 and 11; Linux | $29.99 once per computer; 3-day trial | Nine views on Mac incl. map, list, sunburst, flame | Restore point, 7-day undo (with exceptions) |

### Is there a free DaisyDisk alternative?

Three, each with a different shape:

- **GrandPerspective**: a rectangular treemap instead of rings, with more ways to colour and filter it than DaisyDisk offers. Open source (GPL v2), free from SourceForge or $2.99 in the App Store, the same app either way. Version 3.8.0 raised the minimum to macOS 14; 3.7.2 still runs on macOS 11 to 13.
- **OmniDiskSweeper**: no picture, just a list sorted by size, and a Trash button. Free; Omni lists macOS 11 to 26.
- **WizTreeMac**: the new Mac port of the Windows favourite, a size-sorted tree with a treemap, free for personal use on macOS 12 or later.

None of them deletes more safely than DaisyDisk by default except OmniDiskSweeper, which moves items to the Trash. If an undo matters to you, that narrows the field.

### Is there an alternative that can undo a deletion?

Bytesweep is built around it. Nothing it cleans is deleted outright: items go to a restore point on the same disk and Undo puts them back where they were, for 7 days. The exceptions are actions macOS carries out itself, such as deleting local Time Machine snapshots, and the app tells you before you confirm one.

It also does the step DaisyDisk leaves to you. One scan gives nine views (Map, List, By kind, Biggest files, Not used for a long time, Sunburst, Flame, Bubbles and Mind Map), and the folders that fill most Macs are named and rated safe, review first or keep: Xcode data, Docker's disk image, iPhone backups, package caches, local AI models, and files in iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive that are already in the cloud and can come off the Mac. Duplicates and similar photos, and app uninstalling with leftovers, are in the same app.

### Is Bytesweep worth three times the price?

Only if you will use more than the map. Bytesweep is $29.99 once per computer against DaisyDisk's $9.99 for up to five Macs, so for a household with several Macs that only wants to see where space went, DaisyDisk or the free GrandPerspective is the better buy. Bytesweep earns its price when you also want the cleanup done for you with an undo, duplicates found, apps removed completely, and the same tool on a Windows PC or Linux machine. It is free to try for 3 days, needs macOS 14 or later, and there is no subscription. [Pricing and licence terms](https://bytesweep.app/pricing.html).
