## What is a good alternative to OmniDiskSweeper?

OmniDiskSweeper 1.16 is free and simple but lists only macOS 11 to 26. Four Mac alternatives, free and paid, compared by view, price, macOS support and how they delete.

**Short answer**

For free, GrandPerspective (a treemap, macOS 14 or later) or WizTreeMac (a list plus treemap, macOS 12 or later). For a clearer map, DaisyDisk at $9.99 once. For explanations and a 7-day undo, Bytesweep at $29.99 once. OmniDiskSweeper itself still works: version 1.16 (September 2025) is free, though Omni lists support only up to macOS 26.

### Is OmniDiskSweeper still maintained?

Lightly. The Omni Group lists it under Omni Labs ("Sometimes we make software for us… we make it available to you, too"), with no price. Its update feed jumps from version 1.13 in February 2021 to 1.16 on 12 September 2025, whose release note says it "is supported on macOS 11 through macOS 26". Nothing has been said about macOS 27, so on the current macOS it is untested by its maker rather than known to be broken.

What it does, it does well: a column browser of your disk, "largest to smallest", with a button to Trash or open what you select. Since version 1.10 Trash is the default; holding Option reveals Destroy, which deletes immediately.

### How do the alternatives compare?

| Tool | Runs on | Price and licence | How it shows space | How it deletes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| OmniDiskSweeper | macOS 11 to 26 (per Omni) | Free download (no price listed) | Size-sorted column list | To the Trash; Option for permanent |
| GrandPerspective | macOS 14+ | Free (SourceForge) or $2.99 (App Store), GPL v2 | Treemap | Yes (Trash not stated) |
| WizTree | Windows; macOS 12+ (WizTreeMac) | Free for personal use; supporter code from $25 once | Tree list and treemap | Not stated by the maker |
| DaisyDisk | macOS 10.13+ | $9.99 once, up to 5 personal Macs | Ring map | Permanently, 5 seconds to cancel |
| Bytesweep | macOS 14+; Windows 10 and 11; Linux | $29.99 once per computer; 3-day trial | Nine views on Mac incl. map, list, sunburst, flame | Restore point, 7-day undo (with exceptions) |

Prices and versions read on each maker's site on 4 November 2026. Bytesweep's version is the current Mac and Windows release.

### Which one is right for you?

**You like the list.** WizTreeMac keeps a size-sorted tree like OmniDiskSweeper's and adds a treemap underneath; it is free for personal use and new (September 2026). Finder's list view with Calculate all sizes is the zero-install version, only slower.

**You want to see it.** GrandPerspective draws every file as a rectangle sized by bytes, which makes a single huge file or a swollen folder obvious in a way a list does not. Free from SourceForge or $2.99 in the App Store, open source under the GPL v2, and kept up to date (3.8.1, September 2026).

**You want the nicest map and do not mind paying a little.** DaisyDisk, $9.99 once for up to five personal Macs, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. It can also show and purge purgeable space and local snapshots, which OmniDiskSweeper cannot see, though not in its App Store edition. Note that its Collector deletes permanently, not to the Trash.

**You want to know what things are before deleting them.** That is the part none of the above do, and the reason Bytesweep exists.

### What does Bytesweep add over a plain disk browser?

- **Names for the folders that fill a Mac.** Xcode DerivedData and simulators, Docker's disk image, iPhone backups, Homebrew and pip caches, local AI models, cloud folders whose files are also on the Mac. Each is rated safe, review first or keep.
- **An undo.** OmniDiskSweeper sends to the Trash, which helps until you empty it. Bytesweep keeps cleaned files on the same disk for 7 days, so Undo puts them back where they were. The exceptions, such as deleting local Time Machine snapshots, are things macOS does itself, and the app says so before you press the button.
- **More than one view.** Map, List, By kind, Biggest files, Not used for a long time, Sunburst, Flame, Bubbles and Mind Map, all from one scan.
- **The rest of the clean-up.** Duplicates and similar photos, app uninstalling with leftovers, and cloud files removed from the Mac once macOS reports them uploaded.

It needs macOS 14 or later, is free to try for 3 days, and costs $29.99 once per computer to clean. If you only ever want a sorted list, stay with OmniDiskSweeper or WizTreeMac; that is a fair choice.

### Whatever you use, check these two settings

Give the app **Full Disk Access** (System Settings, Privacy & Security, Full Disk Access), or macOS hides Mail, Messages, Safari and parts of ~/Library from it and the totals come out low. And compare the app's total with the free space Finder reports: if tens of gigabytes are missing, they are usually local Time Machine snapshots or purgeable space, which no file list shows. [What purgeable space is](https://bytesweep.app/blog/purgeable-space-mac.html) explains how to tell.
