## Is there a SpaceSniffer for Mac?

SpaceSniffer runs only on Windows. The Mac apps with a zoomable treemap, how to rebuild its filters (*.jpg;>1mb;<3months) in Finder or Terminal, and which tool to pick.

**Short answer**

No. SpaceSniffer, a free, portable treemap tool now at version 2.2.0.27, is Windows only. On a Mac, GrandPerspective gives you a free treemap with filters, DaisyDisk a zoomable map for $9.99, and Bytesweep a map plus cleanup. Its filter syntax, such as `*.jpg;>1mb;<3months`, translates directly into a Finder smart folder or one `find` command.

### What makes SpaceSniffer different?

SpaceSniffer, from Uderzo Software, is "freeWare (donations are welcome) and portable": no installer, settings in an XML file beside the program. Its treemap is live. You can click into it while the scan is still running, double-click a block to zoom into that folder, and watch blocks change as files are written or deleted. What its fans miss most on other systems is the filter box:

- `*.jpg` shows only JPEGs, and `|*.jpg` hides them;
- `>1mb` and `>2years` or `<3months` filter by size and age;
- tags such as `:red` mark files you want to come back to;
- and they combine, as in `*.jpg;>1mb;<3months;|:yellow`.

The maker's site lists version 2.2.0.27 and describes only Windows; there is no Mac build and no port announced.

### Which Mac apps have a SpaceSniffer-style treemap?

| Tool | Price and licence | How it shows space | How it deletes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| GrandPerspective | Free (SourceForge) or $2.99 (App Store), GPL v2 | Treemap | Yes (Trash not stated) |
| DaisyDisk | $9.99 once, up to 5 personal Macs | Ring map | Permanently, 5 seconds to cancel |
| WizTree | Free for personal use; supporter code from $25 once | Tree list and treemap | Not stated by the maker |
| Bytesweep | $29.99 once per computer; 3-day trial | Nine views on Mac incl. map, list, sunburst, flame | Restore point, 7-day undo (with exceptions) |

Prices and versions read on each maker's site on 4 November 2026. Bytesweep's version is the current Mac and Windows release.

GrandPerspective is the closest in spirit: free, a treemap that fills the window, and filters you can apply while scanning (mask, filter or exclude) plus colouring by name, extension, type, size or date. It does not update live as files change; you rescan. DaisyDisk's map is a set of rings rather than rectangles, and you click into a segment to zoom, much as you double-click in SpaceSniffer.

### How do I rebuild SpaceSniffer filters on a Mac?

Most SpaceSniffer filters are a file type, a size and an age. Finder and Terminal both understand all three.

| SpaceSniffer filter | Terminal | Finder search (Command-F) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `*.mov` | `find ~ -iname '*.mov'` | Name ends with .mov |
| `>1gb` | `find ~ -size +1G` | File Size is greater than 1 GB |
| `>2years` (older than) | `find ~ -mtime +730` | Last modified date is before (a date two years ago) |
| `<3months` (newer than) | `find ~ -mtime -90` | Last modified date is within last 3 months |
| `\|*.jpg` (exclude) | `! -iname '*.jpg'` | Hold Option, click + and choose None |

Put together, `*.jpg;>1mb;<3months` becomes:

```
find ~ -type f -iname '*.jpg' -size +1M -mtime -90 -exec du -h {} + 2>/dev/null | sort -h
```

In Finder, add one row per condition with the + button, then click Save to keep the search as a smart folder in the sidebar, which is the nearest thing to a saved SpaceSniffer filter. Finder searches skip folders Spotlight does not index, most of ~/Library among them, so use Terminal when the space you are chasing is in app data.

### What about SpaceSniffer's tags?

macOS has colour tags built in, in Finder. Select files, right-click and pick a colour, then click that tag in the Finder sidebar to see them all, or search for `tag:red` in Spotlight. Unlike SpaceSniffer's tags, these are stored with the file, so they survive a rescan and show in every app.

### Which should a SpaceSniffer user choose?

If you mostly looked and then deleted things by hand, GrandPerspective plus Finder smart folders covers it for free. If you liked how quick it was to dive into a block, try DaisyDisk. If the treemap was the step before working out what a mysterious folder was, Bytesweep is built for that: Map, Sunburst, Flame and six other views of one scan, the big Mac folders named and rated safe, review first or keep, and a 7-day undo on what it cleans (macOS's own actions, such as removing local Time Machine snapshots, excepted). It runs on macOS 14 or later, is free to try for 3 days, and costs $29.99 once per computer to clean. There is a Windows version in the Microsoft Store too, for the PC you used SpaceSniffer on.
