## Is there a WinDirStat for Mac?

WinDirStat is Windows only. Which Mac apps give you its treemap, extension list, duplicate finder and cleanups, which is free, and which one has not been updated since 2019.

**Short answer**

No. WinDirStat 2.9.3 (October 2026) is open source but built and tested only for Windows. On a Mac, GrandPerspective is the closest free match for its treemap, and Disk Inventory X copied its layout but has not been updated since 2019 and is Intel-only. WizTreeMac and Bytesweep add the extension-style breakdown and cleanup tools.

### Why is there no Mac version?

WinDirStat is a Windows program through and through: its [README](https://github.com/windirstat/windirstat) lists Windows 7 to 11 and Windows Server 2008 R2 to 2025 as the systems version 2 is "developed for and tested on", in x86, x64 and ARM64 builds. It is free under the GPL v3 or later, and it is more active than its age suggests: version 2.9.3 came out on 11 October 2026, and the 2.x line added sunburst and flame graph views, a hash-based duplicate finder and recovery of deleted files to the treemap and extension list people know.

Running it inside a Windows virtual machine on a Mac (Parallels, VMware Fusion, UTM) works, but it then measures the virtual machine's own disk, not your Mac's, so it does not solve the problem most people search for.

### Which WinDirStat features have a Mac equivalent?

| In WinDirStat | Free on a Mac | In Bytesweep for Mac |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Treemap | GrandPerspective; WizTreeMac | Map view |
| Directory list sorted by size | OmniDiskSweeper; WizTreeMac; Finder list view with Calculate all sizes | List view |
| Extension list (space by file type) | GrandPerspective's colour-by-extension; `find` in Terminal (below) | By kind view |
| Sunburst and flame graph | DaisyDisk's ring map (paid, $9.99) | Sunburst and Flame views |
| Duplicate finder | Not in GrandPerspective or OmniDiskSweeper; WizTree has one on Windows | Duplicates: exact copies and similar photos |
| Cleanups (run cleanup tools, custom commands) | Terminal | Clean, with a 7-day undo for what it can put back |
| Recover deleted files | None of the above | File recovery, for USB sticks, SD cards and drives |

### What about Disk Inventory X?

For years it was the standard answer: a Mac app laid out like WinDirStat, with a treemap based on KDirStat and a file-kind list beside it, free under the GPL. It still downloads, but version 1.3 dates from 8 December 2019, supports macOS 10.13 to 10.15, is Intel-only (so it runs on an Apple silicon Mac only through Rosetta) and, in the maker's own release note, is "still not signed nor notarized by Apple". On a current Mac that means a Gatekeeper warning and an app that has never been tested on your version of macOS. GrandPerspective, which is maintained (3.8.1, September 2026), is the safer free pick.

### Can I get WinDirStat's extension list from Terminal?

Yes, roughly. This adds up the space used by each file extension under your home folder and prints the top 20, which is the question the extension list answers:

```
find ~ -type f -name '*.*' -print0 2>/dev/null |
  xargs -0 stat -f '%z %N' 2>/dev/null |
  awk '{ n=$2; sub(/.*\./, "", n); s[tolower(n)] += $1 }
       END { for (e in s) printf "%10.1f MB  .%s\n", s[e]/1048576, e }' |
  sort -rn | head -20
```

It reads every file, so on a large home folder it takes a few minutes. File names with spaces are cut at the first space when the extension is taken, which skews a few rows but not the big ones. Give Terminal Full Disk Access first, or protected folders are skipped.

### Which one should a WinDirStat user pick?

- **You want the picture, free:** GrandPerspective. It is the nearest thing to WinDirStat's treemap and is open source too.
- **You want WinDirStat's list-plus-treemap layout:** WizTreeMac, free for personal use, macOS 12 or later.
- **You used WinDirStat's cleanups and duplicate finder as much as the map:** Bytesweep, which puts the map, the type breakdown, duplicates and cleanup in one app and explains each big folder before you delete it. Cleaned items go to a restore point and can be put back for 7 days, apart from what macOS does itself, such as removing local Time Machine snapshots. It is free to try for 3 days, then $29.99 once per computer, on macOS 14 or later; the Windows version, from the Microsoft Store, has the treemap and sunburst too if you still use a PC.

| Tool | Runs on | Price and licence | Latest version | How it deletes |

| WizTree | Windows; macOS 12+ (WizTreeMac) | Free for personal use; supporter code from $25 once | 4.33 (Windows), 1.00 (Mac), 16 Sep 2026 | Not stated by the maker |
