## How do I clear disk space on a Mac quickly?

A five-minute routine to clear disk space on a Mac with what is built in: the Trash, Downloads, Storage recommendations, old backups and big apps, in the order that pays most.

**Short answer**

Empty the Trash, sort Downloads by size and delete old installers and videos, then open System Settings, General, Storage and act on its recommendations. Delete old iPhone backups from Finder, remove apps you no longer use, and restart. On most Macs that frees several gigabytes in five minutes, without Terminal and without touching anything you need.

### Minute 1: how full is it, really?

Choose Apple menu, System Settings, General, Storage, and wait for the bar to finish counting. Note the free figure at the top: it is the number to beat. Finder's own figure can look better, because it counts purgeable space (room macOS says it can reclaim) as available. If the two disagree by a lot, [what purgeable space is](https://bytesweep.app/blog/purgeable-space-mac.html) explains why.

If the disk is so full the Mac is struggling (fewer than about 5 GB free), do minute 2 first and restart, then come back.

### Minute 2: Trash and Downloads

1. Open the Trash in the Dock, look through it once, then choose Finder, Empty Trash. Files in the Trash still take space.
2. Open Downloads, press Command-2 for list view and click the **Size** column. Disk images (`.dmg`), installers (`.pkg`), zip files and videos you have already watched are the usual top rows. Drag them to the Trash.
3. Look at the Desktop too: screen recordings land there by default and run to hundreds of megabytes each.

Empty the Trash again at the end, not now: until then it is your undo.

### Minute 3: let macOS suggest

Back in System Settings, General, Storage, the Recommendations section offers up to three switches. Apple describes them like this:

| Recommendation | What it does | Worth turning on if |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Store in iCloud | Keeps Desktop and Documents, photos and messages in iCloud, with only recent files on the Mac when space is needed | You pay for enough iCloud storage and are usually online |
| Optimize Storage | Removes Apple TV films and shows you have watched, and keeps only recent email attachments on the Mac | Almost always |
| Empty Trash Automatically | Erases items that have been in the Trash for more than 30 days | You do not use the Trash as a filing cabinet |

Below the recommendations, each category has an info button (ⓘ). Under Documents, the **Large Files**and**Unsupported Apps** tabs are the quickest wins.

### Minute 4: backups and apps

**Old iPhone and iPad backups.** Connect nothing; open Finder, select your iPhone in the sidebar if it is listed, or go to System Settings, General, Storage, iOS Files. Delete backups of devices you no longer own. Each can be tens of gigabytes.

**Apps you never open.** In Storage, click the info button next to Applications and sort by size, or open the Applications folder in list view with Calculate all sizes (Command-J). Games, video editors and old copies of macOS installers ("Install macOS …") are the big ones. App Store apps can be downloaded again at any time, free.

### Minute 5: restart, and check the bar again

Restarting clears swap files and gives macOS a chance to release purgeable space and recount the bar. Open Storage again and compare with minute 1. If you are still short of room, the space is somewhere the steps above do not reach: the grey System Data bar, developer folders, a Docker disk image, local AI models or a Photos library. Those take longer and need more care:

- [The twelve places Mac storage usually goes](https://bytesweep.app/free-up-space-on-mac.html), biggest first, with exact paths

- [How to find large files](https://bytesweep.app/answers/find-large-files-on-mac.html), hidden ones included

### What not to do in a hurry

- Do not drag folders out of `~/Library` to the Trash. Caches sit next to mail, passwords and app databases. [What is safe in the Library folder](https://bytesweep.app/answers/mac-library-folder-what-to-delete.html) goes through it folder by folder.
- Do not delete files inside the Photos or Music library packages. Delete in the app, then empty Recently Deleted.
- Do not delete files in iCloud Drive to "free space": that deletes them on every device. Right-click and choose Remove Download instead.

### Can an app do the five minutes for me?

Bytesweep scans the whole disk once and lists what the steps above find, plus what they miss: Xcode and Docker data, package caches, local AI models and cloud files that are already uploaded. Each item is rated safe, review first or keep, and its Clean page ticks only the safe ones. What it cleans goes to a restore point on the same disk, so Undo puts it back for 7 days; actions macOS performs itself, such as deleting local Time Machine snapshots, cannot be undone and are marked. It runs on macOS 14 or later and is free to try for 3 days; cleaning needs a licence, $29.99 once per computer, no subscription.
