How Bytesweep compares
There are good tools in this space and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Here is the whole market, what each one costs, what it actually does, and the four cases where you should buy something else.
Checked against each vendor's own website in September 2026.
The market, group by group
Disk tools split into three camps. Almost nobody covers more than one.
Visual disk analyzers
They draw a beautiful picture of your disk. Almost none of them clean anything up for you, and most cover one operating system.

Cleaners and maintenance suites
These do remove junk, but the good ones are Mac-only and have moved to a subscription. You keep paying to keep cleaning.

Duplicate finders
Single-purpose tools. They find copies well but tell you nothing about where your space actually went.

Why people pick us
Six differences that hold up when you check them.
One licence, three operating systems
Almost every rival is single-platform. If you have a MacBook, a Windows desktop and a Linux server, you currently need three different tools and three mental models. Bytesweep is one app and one $15 key covering three machines in any mix.
The only one with real undo
Every other tool in this table deletes and wishes you luck. Bytesweep moves items to a restore point on the same disk, which is instant because it is a rename, not a copy. Undo puts everything back in one click for seven days.
It both finds and fixes
Analyzers show you the problem. Cleaners fix problems you cannot see. Bytesweep does both, so you can go from "what is that 48 GB blob" to "it is gone, and here is the undo button" without switching apps.
Buy once, not every year
CleanMyMac starts at $3.33 a month, so three years costs about $120. TreeSize Personal is €20.40 a year. Bytesweep is $15 once, every 1.x update included, after a 14-day trial with no card.
Priced for where you live
Outside high-income markets the price is 50% lower automatically, charged in your own currency across 120+ currencies. Most rivals charge one US price everywhere.
Offline by design
No account, no telemetry, no file names leaving the machine. The only network call in the whole app is the licence check. That is a claim you can verify by pulling the network cable; everything except activation still works.
When you should not buy Bytesweep
A comparison page that says "we win everything" is worth nothing. Four cases where a rival is the better answer:
Everything else, and especially "I have more than one computer and they are not all the same OS", is what we built this for.
Questions
Is Bytesweep just a prettier WinDirStat?
No. WinDirStat draws a treemap and lets you delete files. Bytesweep adds seven more views, automatic detection of caches, build folders, app leftovers and old installers, a duplicate and similar-photo finder, per-OS system maintenance, scheduled reports, and an undo that none of the free analyzers have.
Why should I pay when ncdu and WinDirStat are free?
If a treemap is all you need, do not pay. People buy Bytesweep for the part after the treemap: knowing which of those folders are safe to delete, removing them across three operating systems, and being able to undo it. The 14-day trial lets you decide before paying.
How is this different from CleanMyMac?
CleanMyMac is a mature, notarized Mac suite with around 25 tools, including malware scanning, a software updater, performance tuning and its own Space Lens storage map. It is a subscription and it is Mac only. Bytesweep is narrower on purpose: eight ways to see the disk rather than one, a one-time price, the same app and licence on Windows and Linux, and an undo on every sweep. If you want the whole maintenance suite for one Mac, theirs is the better buy. If you want the storage half, want to own it outright, and have more than one kind of computer, ours is.
Is there a free trial?
Yes, 14 days with no card and no account. The trial covers all eight views, the inspector, cleanup categories, duplicates, file types, snapshots, the live monitor and ten manual sweeps a day. Features marked Pro need a licence, and after 14 days so does the app.
How current is this comparison?
