## Get back deleted files

Scanning only reads the drive and is free. Stop using the drive as soon as you can: new files can overwrite old ones.

### Look for deleted files

On Mac

1. Open **Get back deleted files**.
2. Give it permission when asked: only the system can read a drive directly.
3. Press **Look for deleted files**.**Look deeper**takes longer and finds more.**Lost partitions** looks for those.
4. Choose files and recover them. Do not recover to the source drive.

On Windows

1. Open **Get back deleted files**.
2. Check the **Recycle Bin** tab first.
3. On **Deleted files**, press**Run as administrator** if asked, then scan.
4. Choose files and recover them to another drive.

On Linux

1. Open **Get back deleted files**.
2. Check the Trash tab first.
3. Enter your password when asked. ByteSweep only reads the drive.
4. Choose files and recover them to another drive.

Recovery can't promise every file. A file whose space has been reused is gone.
