## Your first check

The first check tells you how full your disk is and what can go. It changes nothing.

### Run the check

On Mac

1. Open ByteSweep.
2. Read the three lines on the welcome screen.
3. Press **Check my Mac**.
4. Wait for the three steps: **How full your disk is**,**What can be cleaned safely**and**What opens at startup**. You land on Home.

This check asks for no permissions. ByteSweep asks for those later, only when a page needs one.

On Windows

1. Open ByteSweep.
2. Read the three lines under **Welcome to ByteSweep**.
3. Press **Check my PC**. You can stop it at any time.
4. When it finishes you land on Home.

ByteSweep runs as a normal user. Pages that need more offer **Run as administrator**.

On Linux

1. Open ByteSweep from your apps, or type `bytesweep` in a terminal.
2. Read the three lines on the welcome screen.
3. Press **Check my computer**.
4. When it finishes you land on Home.

ByteSweep runs as you. It asks for your password only to clean something that belongs to the system.

### Your free trial

You get 3 days to look at everything: every scan and every page. [Cleaning needs the one-time licence](https://bytesweep.app/docs/setup/licence.html), even during the trial. Undo is always free.

#### Now try it on your computer

Run the check, then find the size of what can be cleaned on Home.

##### If it doesn't work

If the check seems stuck on a very large disk, give it a few minutes. On a Mac, some folders stay closed until you [allow Full Disk Access](https://bytesweep.app/docs/setup/permissions.html), so the figure can be lower than the true one.
