## Clean something safely

You see everything before anything goes. These are the steps every time.

### Clean the safe things

On Mac

1. Open **Clean**from**Free up space**.
2. Stay on **Safe to clean**.**Worth a look first** is the second tab.
3. Press a row to read what it is, what happens afterwards and whether it can be put back.
4. Tick what you want gone, then press **Review and clean**.
5. Read the review, then press **Clean**. The button shows the size.

On Windows and Linux

1. Open **Clean**from**Free up space**.
2. Press **Scan for junk**.
3. Press **Details**on a row to read what it is. Rows marked**Check first** are not ticked for you.
4. Press **Clean**. The button shows the size.
5. Read **Clean selected items?** and confirm.

In Advanced, **Clean** is in the sidebar, as in these pictures.

ByteSweep checks the list again before it removes anything. Anything it can't be sure about is left alone.

On Mac

During the trial the button says **Buy once to clean**. You can still read the whole review first.

On Windows and Linux

During the trial the button says **Buy once to clean**. You can still see the whole list first.

On Linux

System items show **Asks for a password**. Your desktop's own prompt appears for those, one at a time.

#### Now try it on your computer

Clean one small row from the safe list, such as old logs or temporary files.

##### If it doesn't work

If nothing is listed, the disk may already be tidy: press **Check again**on a Mac or**Scan again** on Windows and Linux. If the button says Buy once to clean, your trial has no cleaning. Add a licence in [Settings](https://bytesweep.app/docs/setup/licence.html).
