Send to your devices

## Send files between your computer and your phone, straight over Wi-Fi

Emailing a file to yourself, or uploading it to a cloud to download it again a metre away, is the long way round. Send to your devices takes it straight from one of your devices to another, over the Wi-Fi you are already on.

### How a send works

Open Send to your devices and the devices around you that have ByteSweep appear in a circle. Tick the ones that should get it, one or several. Put what you are sending in the tray below: files, whole folders, a note or a link. Then press Send once, and each device you ticked gets its own copy.

On a Mac you can also start from Finder’s Share menu, and on Windows from File Explorer’s right-click menu.

- Tick one device or several
- Add files, folders, a note or a link
- Press Send once
- Each device asks its owner, then saves what arrives

### Straight from device to device

Your devices find each other on the local network and talk directly. There is no ByteSweep server in between, no account to sign in to, and nothing goes through the internet.

Both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi, or on a phone’s hotspot. With no Wi-Fi around at all, an Android phone can make a small network of its own and show a code to scan, and a Mac or PC joins it with the name and password shown under the code. Apple devices can also reach each other with no network at all, as long as Wi-Fi is switched on.

### You say yes first

The first time two devices meet, both show the same six-digit code. If the codes match, nobody is listening in between, and you accept. From then on that device is one of yours.

Even then, nothing arrives on its own: every send shows who is sending, what and how much, with Accept and Decline. A big send asks once, not for every part of it. In Settings you choose who may send to you: everyone nearby, only your own devices, or nobody, which also makes your device invisible to the others.

### Encrypted, and checked

Every connection gets fresh keys, and everything sent over it is encrypted with AES-256. Each device proves who it is with its own key, kept in the system’s protected store: the Keychain on Apple devices, Windows’ own protected storage, and the Android Keystore.

Each file is checked when it arrives against a fingerprint of the original (SHA-256). A file that does not match is thrown away rather than kept half-right. What you get is the original file, at full quality, with its name and its folders as they were.

### Big sends, and moving instead of copying

A whole photo library or a large folder goes in parts, so a dropped connection costs one part, not the lot. A file cut off halfway picks up where it stopped if you send it again within a day. Both sides show the speed and the time left.

Choose Move them instead of Keep the originals and the sending device removes its own copies, but only after every file has arrived and been checked.

### Where things arrive

On a Mac, a PC or a Linux computer, in your Downloads folder unless you choose another, with folders kept as they were. On an iPhone, in Files under On My iPhone › Bytesweep › Received, and photos and videos can go to Photos as well. On an Android phone, in Downloads › Bytesweep. A note or a link is shown when it arrives, with Copy, and Open for a link.

### Your phone on the big screen

The same connection lets a Mac or PC look at a phone. View your phone shows every photo and video on it, and plays them. Clean your phone goes through the phone’s duplicates, similar shots, big videos and screenshots, so you choose on a big screen what can go.

The phone decides everything. It asks before anything is shown, and it deletes only through its own confirmation, the same one it shows for any delete. Nothing is kept on the computer.

### What it costs

Receiving is free on every device. Sending is free for your first 10 sends on each device; after that it comes with the ByteSweep licence on a computer and with the one-time purchase in the phone app. A send counts once the other side accepts it, however many files it carries.

### On each kind of device

| | Mac, Windows and Linux | iPhone and Android |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Send files, folders, a note or a link | Yes | Yes |
| To several devices at once | Yes | Yes |
| Receiving | Free | Free |
| Free sends before buying | 10 | 10 |
| With no Wi-Fi network | A Mac or PC joins a phone’s network | An Android phone makes one |
| See and clean a phone from a computer | Mac and Windows | The phone asks first |

### Questions

#### Does anything go through the internet or a server?

No. Your devices find each other on your own network and connect directly. There is no ByteSweep server and no account, and the files never leave your Wi-Fi.

#### Do the devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi?

Yes, or on a phone’s hotspot. Some guest and office networks stop devices from seeing each other; a phone’s hotspot gets round that. With no Wi-Fi at all, an Android phone can make a network of its own.

#### What does the other device need?

ByteSweep on a Mac, a Windows PC or a Linux computer, or Bytesweep: Clean & Transfer 1.4 or later on an iPhone or an Android phone.

#### Do photos and videos lose quality?

No. The original file is sent, not a copy made smaller, and it is checked against the original when it arrives.

#### Can a stranger nearby send me files?

Nothing arrives until you press Accept, and a device you have not met before also shows a six-digit code to compare. If you would rather not be asked at all, let only your own devices send to you, or switch receiving off.

#### What happens if the Wi-Fi drops halfway?

The send stops. Send it again within a day and each file continues from where it stopped. A big send goes in parts, so the parts that already arrived stay where they are.

#### Is it free?

Receiving is always free. The first 10 sends from each device are free too; after that sending comes with the licence on a computer, or the one-time purchase in the phone app.
